Specops

Specops has made a strong debut with there first three releases. I am excited to hear what they rinse out in the future. In the Meantime check out what they have out now

SPECDR003
DJ Harp - Gran Torino
DJ Harp - Jakes Bit

Gran Torino - Made me feel like I was in a 40's gangster movie. I'm trapped in a secret room in a big house on a hill. There is a sample in this tune that sounds like somebody tapping Morse code on a metal door. Dark, Deep, the soundscape to a gangster movie from hell.

Jakes Bit - Started out like dubstep then moved into a more bass heavy minimal groove. Very tech. The Grungy Bass still screams DUBSTEP! and makes you want to pump your mean fist!

SPECDR001

DJ Harp - Twin Peakz
DJ Harp & Ryze+Fall - Rap as a Weapon

Twin Peakz - This tune runs! The first part of the bar brings me back to the raves of the early 90's while the second part of the bar snaps me back into the present with that very familiar half-stepped snare, and half stepped breaks. Then the bassline slams you in the chest. Dubstep is a very distinctive 21st century sound. Again with the pumping of mean fists!

Rap as a Weapon - Very Smooth. I like the dark undertones on this one. It is still dancy but has a very dark message intertwined and gives off some bleak vibes.
Solid releases!

Some Jazz in your Subs

I guess I'm a sucker for free music. Especially released EP's given away by the label itself. It is pretty extraordinary and it just goes to show that the music industry is a whole is changing. I am glad to see that things have gotten way independent and I think that major labels may be struggling to keep up with the digital revolution and its impact upon music and the industry as a whole. I am not here to talk about music industry trends however, i am here to talk about the music itself.

Dubkraft has released a smooth dub EP that is very Jazz oriented. Subjazz "Lo-Fi in Hi-Fi" is a collection of 3 tracks produced by Subjazz. These tracks are very chilled out and minimal and make me think of rainy days and warm coffee. Great tracks to play in the background of a wine bar, or some bourgeois art show; But would be perfect on the dance floor either to start and build up with or even drop at high peak and change the mood up entirely. Even while minimal these tunes manage to still be very danceable and, like all Dubkraft releases, make the subs vibrate;with a bit of jazz.

You can even get it for FREE!!

Milkman brings it fresh! Be sure to get your Milkmoney!

Milkmoney Music, An up and coming force in the Dubstep and Bass Music realm of things, has just TODAY released a Free EP entitled Hallucination. Now you might think, "Hey, that sounds familiar". Well you are probably very familiar with Beat Chemist and curator of Illbient Music DJ Spooky, who has long been a force to be reckoned with in the underground. Hallucinate is a track by DJ Spooky which The Milkman felt so inspired by one night that he decided to release a remix EP and give it away for free on the internet. Probably to avoid all those pesky legal copyright issues. I am all for it. Fuck You RIAA! Either way, I'm sure DJ Spooky will think most of these remixes are sick. Which they are. In fact they are all stompers. Depending upon what you are in the mood for.

Now about the remixes themselves.

DJ Harp Remix

DJ Harp has a more minimal take on the DJ Spooky concoction. This one definitely has that DJ Harp/Specops feel to it. A broken minimal techno dub beat adding tension into the air.

The Milkman Remix

Milkman remix sounds just like you'd expect it to. Typical Milkman fashion. Heavy Kicks and Bass, Minimal Hi-Hats, and a stuttered ambience that leaves you with the image of a bad acid trip. Sick stuff as always from Milkman

Zillion Remix

I have always liked Zillion and this particular Zillion remix is pretty spot on with the rest. Bass Heavy (Like every tune on the EP!) and Groovy with a steppy drum rhythm. That is much like 2-Step or Garage, but the melodics are way more tech rather than funky.

Crosus remix

Crosus delivers a dark, deep, bass heavy take on the DJ Spooky recreation. Dark and Disturbing like walking through the shadows of nightmares awaiting an ambush of wild wolves or an army of marauders coming to slit your throat and take you for all you have.

303 Sumatra Remix

I guess every "Dubstep" remix EP should include a dance floor wobbler and the 303 Sumatra remix is that. Personally this my least favorite remix of the bunch, not really enjoying the bass wobblers as much. I have enjoyed 303's other work, particularly The No Disco EP. It's not a bad tune and is quite dubby and I'm sure that it would make a moving dance floor lose it's head.

Cursed Chimera Remix

Cursed Chimera doesn't really make Dubstep. I don't know what to call it. Techno. IDM. Something new and different that's for sure. I have heard other releases by this man and they are great. This remix is no different. Some of the unmelodies in this tune reach a certain frequency that is almost abrasive, but not quite enough to make you cringe. Switches between a half beat to a floor on the floor. Excellent break tune for you IDM or Experimental Electronic people.

Abrasion Equation Remix

I am not sure how is missed this tune completely. I am glad that a reader (Thanks Jared) pointed it out. I am glad he did. This a smooth remix of Hallucinate. It has a psy-ambience vibe to it and takes you on a aural journey through various tones and layers. This sounds like something I would hear on the dancef loor during a Bassnectar set. Beautiful tones, heavy Bass!

Erin Jale Remix

Who is Erin Jale?! This person has utterly decimated this EP. Holy Shit what a sick remix! I almost missed it entirely due to a spelling error. I'm glad I didn't. My favorite on the EP for sure. Dark, deep, rolling bass lines, technical drum precision with a tense high frequency melody that brings visions of a haunted house of horrors where they are murdering children who come to walk through the haunted house on Halloween. This tune is grimy! I dig it. Give me more Erin Jale!

---
Any of these remixes would fit into a variety of places on the dance floor, or they are great for listening to at home. They are each quite unique to themselves and all quite bass heavy. Some more forward moving bass music brought to us by Milkmoney Music. AND IT"S FREE GO DOWNLOAD IT NOW.

So....Dubstep

Dubstep was lurking is the shadows for years before it finally burst into the underground's mainstream roughly 3 years ago (Atleast on this continent) only to explode as the most relevant evolution of next generation electronic music to emerge so far this century. While some naysayers dismissed dubstep early on as too slow for the dancefloor and was going to be a living room genre like trip-hop or atmospheric drum & bass; And it also took a bit for the dancefloor to catch on to the spaced bass rhythms as well. It wasn't long however before the dancefloor "got it".

Nowadays anywhere there is a dubstep exclusive event, which was unheard of 3 years ago, there is ussually a packed out dancefloor with thicker vibes than I've ever felt on any dancefloor. Dubstep has brought many influences with it and people from all sorts of musical backgrounds are getting involved. You'd meet people at a dubstep party that you would definitely never expect.

Dubstep is all over the place right now, and so far it has yet to be sub-categorized. (but there are people that try) There is definitely dubstep which is meant for one place and that is the dancefloor. Driving and Bouncy, most dancefloor dubstep has its roots in Dub, Techno, Rock n' Roll, Hip-Hop, Funk, Electro and Drum n' Bass. There is also some dubstep which is a little less energetic but still follows the same rhythm structure with spaced bass melodies. This dubstep has its roots in Blues, Soul Jazz, Funk, House, Trip-Hop, Ambient, Classical, and even Folk Music. Even though, even the more ambient Dubstep sounds absolutely amazing with a couple thousand watts of sound and some bass bins.

So what is Dubstep? What is its Impact on Music? Where is it going?

Well, I would say that dubstep is a next generation electronically produced music genre defined by a BPM of about 140, with spaced drum patterns and rythmic sub-basslines.

Its impact is that it is the most relevant Dancefloor and living room genre of electronically produced music in the 21st Century and probably the largest evolution of electronic music since Jungle in the mid-1990's. Dubstep has, in a way, changed the electronic music "scene". Relying highly on the internet for promotion and networking....sometimes it may seem that dubstep is a digital internet genre, but you only have to go to the events to realize that this genre is moving people; And not just one kind of person but many inds of people have found something in this rhythm, something that unifies them and moves them to one beat.

It can only go where we want it to. Dubstep This is the future of music.

Into the Vortex

The Global Vortex.  Say it out loud to yourself. Global Vortex.  The Vortex of the Globe.  We all know what global means, but what is a vortex? The dictionary on my mac defines it as "a mass of whirling fluid or air;especially referring to a whirlpool or whirlwind."  A global whirlwind is exactly what we have coming from Global Vortex Radio. A whirlwind of eclectic music being broadcasted worldwide via internet radio.

Since traditional FM radio has pretty much gone down the tube as far as underground music is concerned, internet radio and podcasts have filled that gap. While there are definitely an abundance of internet radio stations on the internet, there are very few that are as eclectic as GVR.

Global Vortex Radio currently has six regular shows which broadcast at multiple times of the week at different times so listeners all over the world can listen at hours of there own choosing.  GVR has also been making a presence at live music events and recording the performances and broadcasting them at a later date.  In addition to every show being played at multiple times, all of the shows and recordings are archived on the GVR home page.

You can tune into Global Vortex Radio 24 hours a day and 7 days a week at www.globalvortexradio.com.  There you can see a listing of show times and stream archived shows and recordings.  It's always  fresh and it's always eclectic.  This station is pushing nothing but solid music from the underground.  To quote their home page "Global Vortex...planetary, evolving, independent electronic fusion sounds from emerging artists to pioneers, It's from Brooklyn, NYC's underground, its 7/24, its new every week, its commercial free, its all yours. Bring yourself!"

A New Endeavor

Today, I guess, is the beginning of a new endeavor; or adventure, what ever you'd like to call it. There really isn't any plan of operation for this newly started blog site, only a general starting point idea.  The point is to push new sounds and rhythms.  To be overly critical of of music and the culture that expresses it.  We want to be critical yet fair.  We are dedicated to the positive side of things and you will rarely see negative reviews on any subject.

We who call ourselves Kno-Tek are just normal people like yourselves who have decided that we would like to have our voices known in the social chaos that is the Electronic Music "Scene". We are not here to be "scene", but to be immersed in a  music and culture and to maybe document some of what is happening; But mostly we will focus solely on music.  You will read about producers, musicians, disc jockeys, emcee's, writers, painters, designers, promoters, and maybe even random ass folks who you've never even heard of.  This is meant to be informative and entertaining
And remember every thing written or posted here are opinions based upon facts. That is all. Nothing more. Feel free to leave comments.  If you would like to submit tunes, mixes or articles please contact knotekmedia@gmail.com Thank You. - ed
